Family: POACEAE
Themeda australis or Kangaroo Grass Tufted perennial. Native. Does not persist well under heavy grazing, and can be out-competed by introduced grasses. Themeda comes from the Arabic thamed meaning clay-pan; australis comes from the Latin for southern. Note: sometimes also called Themeda triandra, although Grasses of NSW (Wheeler, Jacobs & Norton, 2nd edition 1990), and Flora of NSW (Vol 4, edited by Harden 1993) mention T. triandra as African and Asian. T. australis is one of the three species listed for NSW. |
